Block Time Calculator

Free block time calculator for pilots. Enter off-block and on-block times in UTC for each leg and get the block time (even across midnight) plus the total for the day in hours:minutes and decimal hours.

How block time is calculated

Block time is simply on-block − off-block. The only trap is midnight: a flight that pushes back at 23:20Z and arrives on stand at 02:05Z did not take minus 21 hours. When the on-block time is earlier than the off-block time, the calculator adds 24 hours, giving 2:45.

A whole duty day at once

Add a line for every sector you flew. Each leg shows its own block time and the total for the day appears below in both hours:minutes and decimal hours: ready for your logbook or a duty-time check. To total several days or a logbook page, use the flight time calculator.

Frequently asked questions

›What is block time?

Block time runs from off-block, when the aircraft first moves for the purpose of flight, usually at pushback or engine start and taxi, to on-block, when it comes to rest at the end of the flight. It includes taxi out, the flight and taxi in.

›What is the difference between block time and flight time?

Air time runs only from take-off to landing. For aeroplanes, logbook flight time under both FAA (14 CFR 1.1) and EASA definitions runs from first movement for flight until the aircraft comes to rest, so in practice it equals block time.

›How do I calculate a flight that crosses midnight?

If the on-block time is earlier than the off-block time, the flight ended on the next day, so add 24 hours to the on-block time before subtracting. Off 23:20 and on 02:05 UTC is a 2:45 block. The calculator handles this automatically.

›Should I log off-block and on-block in UTC or local time?

Use UTC. It avoids errors with time zones and daylight saving changes, matches flight plans, ATC and ACARS times, and is what most operators and authorities expect in a logbook.

›Which time formats can I enter?

Type 4 digits like 0745 or use a colon like 07:45 or 7:45. Each leg shows its block time as soon as both times are valid, and the total updates for all legs together.
