VHF, readability and Q codes
7 min read
How VHF travels
VHF (the aviation voice band is 117.975–137.000 MHz) goes in line of sight: hills and the curve of the earth block it. Rough range in nautical miles: 1.23 × √(height in feet) for each station, added together. An aircraft at 10,000 ft and a station at sea level: about 1.23 × 100 ≈ 123 NM.
Channels are spaced 8.33 kHz in much of Europe's airspace; 121.5 MHz is the emergency frequency.
