High-speed flight and the envelope

10 min read

Mach number

M = TAS / local speed of sound. The speed of sound depends only on temperature (about 38.94 × √T kt, with T in kelvin): it falls as you climb in the troposphere, so the same TAS is a higher Mach number up high.
