Decompression, fire and ditching

9 min read

Decompression

Signs: a bang, fog in the cabin, cold, ear pain, the cabin altitude warning. Crew oxygen masks on first, establish communication, then an emergency descent to a safe level (often around 10,000 ft, or the minimum safe altitude if higher) as the procedure says. Passenger masks drop automatically, typically set at about 14,000 ft cabin altitude (CS-25 requires them before the cabin passes 15,000 ft).
