Alternates and planning minima

8 min read

Kinds of alternate

Take-off alternate: needed when the weather at the departure aerodrome would not allow a return. For a twin it must be within one hour at one-engine-out cruise speed in still air (two hours for three or more engines; for an EDTO-approved twin, its approved diversion time but not more than two hours), in still air and standard conditions.

Destination alternate: where to go if you cannot land at the destination. Normally at least one is required for IFR; two in some cases (for example when the destination forecast is below the applicable planning minima, or no meteorological information is available).

En-route alternates: for long flights, especially EDTO.
