The ICAO flight plan

9 min read

When it is needed

A flight plan is filed for IFR flights, for any flight to be provided with air traffic control service, for flights across borders, and wherever the state requires it. ICAO asks for it at least 60 minutes before departure; in Europe the Network Manager's IFPS checks every IFR plan, and delays of more than 15 minutes must be updated (a DLA or CHG message, for any EOBT change of more than 15 minutes either way; the ICAO Doc 4444 default is 30 minutes for a controlled flight and 1 hour for an uncontrolled one).
