Moments
Each mass acts at an arm (its distance from a reference datum). Moment = mass × arm. The centre of gravity is the total moment divided by the total mass:
CG = Σ(mass × arm) / Σ mass
Example: 1,000 kg at 10 m and 500 kg at 16 m: moments 10,000 + 8,000 = 18,000 kg·m; total mass 1,500 kg; CG = 12 m from the datum.
